Tuesday May 31

Today we fit in two hikes ... and forgot to take any photos!

First hike was to Crabapple Creek, entering at the eastern M&B site following the markers to the Y and then continued on to the Creek and then down the still unmarked trail beside the creek down to the weatern entrance at the M&B site.

Second hike was into the Nature Conservancy area at the Kumdis .. beautful little trail, no cranes this time but no flies either!

First camping adventure of the Season

Out to Rennell Sound on Sunday for an over nighter ... road in fairly good condition, the big hill no problem .... but be very careful of the "water bars?" on the Rennell Sound stretch there are between 4-5  from the hill to Bonanza.

We checked out the Gregory Creek site and then moved on to Cone Head ... we decided to stay there.

Sunday afternoon we headed over the Bonanza, walked to the western sand edge and lay down in the warm sand with a half buried log for a pillow, fell promptly asleep. We did pick up a few sand dollars for the garden, then headed back to our home beach where we were quite successful in our beach glass hunt ...

Next to our dinner preparations ... lamb curry, couscous, salads, fench bread and rhubarb crisp ... as usual we mused "wonder what the Queen is doing tonight?" hard to believe it could be better than ours.

Evening was some clouds rolls over with a bit of a cool breeze so off to bed ...

Instead of tenting each of us decided to car camp ... which seemed to work quite well, although one car had several 4 legged wee visitors during the night!

We put of the food in the car so as not to attract bears; we got mice instead .... lol.

Next morning low tide and tide pool exploring before heading back to QC to prepare for a fellow hikers good-bye party.

Sandilands Hike May 23, 2011

Off we went again, making sure we will not have any "nature deficite disorder". This time we were out in Skidegate Inlet ... we motored over from Maude Island for a couple hours hiking along the northern shore of Sandilands Island. Got to wave over to Maude Island Farm before we were picked up.

Lots of laughs and photo opportunities ... then home for a terrific meal and an evening of Mexican Train.

Not too sure what the Royals were doing but we had a great time on the Victoria Day.

Our search for the a new hike, Sunday May 22, 2011

We had directions, so off we went trying to find a new trail in the Tarundl area. We tried to find the entrance opposite the Kagan Bay Day use site ... but it was not to be seen so we went on to the Tarundl Bridge and decided to look at that end ... we climbed over the berm and headed up the skid road looking for flagging tape. A little way in we did see some tape, very small piece of pink tape ... it didn't go in line of sight but we just went onward looking for ground disturbances and searching for tape ... interesting forest, lots of fallen mossy alder, then we started to climb up, and up ... on hands and knees. Eventually we got to a great view point. We were lucky to arrive at low tide giving us a great view of the tidal flats of both the Tarundl and the Honna as well as both up and down the inlet. After enjoying the view and declaring that we would come back we then came upon lots of flagging tape so we realized that we had found the original route.

It was a pretty easy hike down the gully, beside a big blowdown ... well flagged and and it took us out exactly where we were supposed to have entered. The problem was pink flagging tape disappeared with new salmonberry growth and pink salmonberry flowers!

None of us had a camera but if you go to google-earth you will see a posted photo there.

We will return ... thanks Reiner.

A new opportunity ...

Thanks so much to the students of HGHES and SFU for the heads up on the "non-govenmental conservation area". It isn't big but it was beautiful today ... we will be back.

Getting ready for World Move for Health Day on Sat. April 7 11-1

Got some trail signs up at many of the entrances ... terrific work by Paul and Michael ... the big blow-down no longer has to be crawled under, along with some of the other alder ... the trail is a bit muddy but is fine to walk.

The creek trail has blooming flowers, from violets to salmonberries. Lots of birds flitting and chirping ... the hotdogs and buns are purchased plus some prizes are ready.

Move Day event is Saturday at Tarundl Creek ... follow the balloons, hikes, weiners, games all between 11 - 1.

Bring your camera ... it should be fun!  The tides are great.

Gore Brook now has some trail markers

Today we started marking the last of our town trails ... Gore Brook.

While not completed there are yellow markers leading from East to West ... entering from behing the school [up 8th] off 1st Avenue [posts are being made for the entry points] and coming out on 2nd Avenue @ 10th. Street. Today it was quite muddy ... perhaps a combination of the snows, rain and heavier traffic.

It was great to have Shawna along as she is working with Mo on a Village trails/walking brochure. Welcome home to Marla and thanks to Betsy and Pedro now experienced markers!
